| Station was later rebuilt with four platforms. Trains ran in having passed the loco off the previous train which had run out onto the pier. This then coupled up to the back of the train and took it off to its next destination. As a result there was very little empty stock working at Ryde Pier Head. All Isle of Wight engines were tank engines. |

Almost certainly one of the four SR paddle steamers used on the Ryde pier head station to Portsmouth Harbour Station service at that time. One or two remained in service till the 1950's and I can remember as a young child the joy of looking into the ships engine room and watching the paddles churning up the sea! |

Most likely an Adams Class 02 which began arriving in 1923. |

As far as I am aware, the Island railway lines only used tank engines - partly because this eliminated the need for turntables, partly because the short trains did not need more powerful locomotives. |
