These buildings were CHRISTCHURCH BUILDINGS...…..dating from 1900. This site was originally occupied by CHRISTCHURCH.....a church... and because of low attendances was demolished in 1899 with the font and other salvaged items were installed at ST AGATHA's church on Stratford Road, Sparkbrook. The relics from the cemetery were reinterred at Warstone Lane cemetery. The double flight of steps linking New Street with Waterloo Street and known as Christchurch Passage still exists although the nature of 'passage' has lost its meaning. Called 'Galloways Corner' because Galloways Chemists occupied the corner site, where Mr Douglas Lehane was the pharmacist in the 1950's. |

I think this points to the southern half of the block which was the Birmingham and Midland Institute acording to OS map 1887. The library was the northern half. |

THIS WAS THE SECOND LIBRARY. THE FIRST WAS IN UNION STREET. (Still cannot understand why this building was demolished. It did not interfere or encroach with its successor, the 'concrete mushroom',also recently demolished, photos show that it could have been left in situ. Perhaps it was a casualty of the mindset of the planners in their eagerness to remove much of the Victorian city to build the ring road.) |

This was the second central library....the first was in UNION STREET. This library was rebuilt after a fire in late 19th century and the staircase has been preserved and installed at Blakesley Hall. A portion of the interior of this building is preserved as THE SHAKESPEARE ROOM at the top floor of the present Reference Library on Broad Street. |
