The bridge in the photograph is not the transporter bridge, that is further up river. The bridge in photograph is a pipe bridge which was later replaced by a foot bridge.

Dylan is correct. The photo shows the first transporter bridge. Brian is referring to the second transporter bridge which still exists (though in a soryy state)

My Dad's first place of work. He started as an apprentice 'fitter and turner' straight from leaving school in 1938. As he reached the age of 21 and the end of his apprenticeship in early 1945, he volunteered to serve in the Merchant Navy and never went back to Crosfields.

This area of the river Mersey was very busy with small craft loading and unloading. If you visit here you can still see the Transporter Bridge - sadly it does not work.
