Has the road name designation changed? It is Bourne Hill right up to Green Lanes. The house numbers you mentioned are listed as Bourne Hill. I have a photo c1910, taken from St John's Church showing a tram on Green Lanes and the large house that stood near the corner. Join Winchmore Hill And Palmers Green Memories to see it and loads more historic photos of the area. |

This picture is actually of Hoppers Road. Stonard Road is the road to the left of the picture. The railway line runs from Palmers Green to Winchmore Hill. The houses alongside the railway are 3 and 5 Hoppers Road, Palmers Green. These two houses were built by my great grandfather Richard Wright, who started the family building and decorating business. Number 5 Hoppers Road (the one nearest to the railway embankment) is the house where I was born, and lived there until 1971. From what I have been told on the corner on the other side of the road was Foxes Garage, which apparently before the invention of cars, was a stop for horses. We used to have a picture taken from the tower of St John's Church (the tower is just out of the picture) This picture was taken across where my g grandfather was building, I believe it was before the houses were built. It showed fields with cows in, no houses off off Bourne Hill. Unfortunately this picture was taken into the local paper in Palmers Green and we never saw it again! |
