I lived in Lyon St and as a little lad about 1950 I remember going in this shop with my mother. It was called Wards and it was a 'Draper's' 32 Carr St.

Carr St. The rear of Carr St was very strange because it looked onto Lyon St. Normally houses on both sides of a street are classed as that street, but not here. I lived at 14 Lyon St and the back yards across the road were Carr St yards.

When I was young in the late 1940s onwards, Smith's Printers were on this Lyon St/Albert St corner.

This corner had a Fish'n'chip shop on it. Today in 2013 it is an Indian Takeaway. This pic is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

In the 40s & 50s possibly earlier this was Hewison's papershop on Ellison St/Lyon St corner. The photo from my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk shows the property. It certainly didn't have that horrible mock Tudor paintwork originally. I think it was just added in the 60s or 70s & looked totally out of place in an Industrial area..

The old Ballast Hill where for hundreds of years ships unloaded their sand ballast. Today ships travelling without cargo use water as ballast which is easy to pump in or out. In the old days sand was used so there were quite a few Ballast Hills along the Tyne riverside.

The Mortuary which was probably left over from when it belonged to the Pit. When the pit was all gone & Hawthorn Leslies used the land for steel stock, the Mortuary was still there & fascinated us local kids trying to see through the gate leading to it in the 1950s
