The Bonding Warehouse in which imported goods were stored duty free until removed by the importer. This enabled small traders such as shopkeepers to import wine, tobacco etc. in bulk without having to pay the full amount of the excise duty up front. Duty was only paid as and when goods were removed. |

According to the book "Britain's Rail Super Centres - York" by Ken Appleby (Ian Allan, 1993, ISBN 0 7110 2072 8) the signals at this end of the station were worked by the Locomotive Yard Signal Box opened in 1909. It had 295 levers, and was thought to be the largest mechanically-worked box anywhere in the world. (It is just off the bottom of this photograph.) It closed with all the other mechanical boxes after the major power signalling scheme was installed at York in 1951. |

Turn-table.
This is where the steam locos would be turned in readiness for joining a train.
This structure survived into the early 1980s when it was removed and the pit filled in before disappearing under the car park which now occupies this location. |

This imposing tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror. The tower has served as a prison and a royal mint, as well as the place where Henry VIII had the bodies of his enemies put on public display. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/cliffords-tower-york/ |

The York Railway Museum Large Exhibits Section was housed at Queen Street in this part of the former York & North Midland Railway locomotive works. The first locomotives arrived in early 1927 and the Section was fully opened to the public in 1928. During the Second World War the Museum was closed and some of the locomotives dispersed to lessen the risk of damage in air raid attacks. Final closure came on 31 December 1973 and the collection was transferred mainly to the new National Railway Museum at Leeman Road in York and also to a new museum at Darlington North Road Station. Demolition followed removal of the final exhibits. |
