The Craven family were the village blacksmiths I think though whether or not in 1926.

I believe the bypass went in during the inter-war years.

It passed (as you suggest) between the cricket sight-screen and the back of what was then the blacksmith's shop

Part of the project included creating roundabouts at either end; the northern one being about where the 1926 photo shows two large (?ash) trees opposite one another, either side of the A61 road to Ripon.

The final 200-300 metres of the B6165 Pateley Bridge road must also have been remodelled, presumably as part of the same project, to pass north of the tennis courts to meet the roundabout. The original course of the B6165 (as shown in the 1926 photo) became redundant and was gated off as a Private Road.

The cricket field endured until, I believe, the 1970's, when a new facility was created at the south end of the village and the old cricket pitch returned to agriculture.

The cricket pitch stayed in use until at least 1990. It then moved to the new pitch and pavilion at the south end of the village. A carpark with public toilets was also created.

Yes, as I recall the allotments were known as "Calley Gardens". Someone once told me it was a contraction of "California"

It's been a long time but I'm pretty sure that the field immediately beyond the allotments was the site of a 1950's excavation which uncovered a Roman road. As a youngster at the local school I remember being taken to see it and being thoroughly unimpressed
