“Roman Cement” had been made at this site since the 1850s, but G & T Earles started making Portland cement here in 1875. The plant was taken over by Blue Circle in 1911. Four rotary kilns were installed 1906-1920 and the original static kilns were cleared. Chalk was originally obtained from the Thames, but a quarry at Hessle commenced operation in 1913. Alluvial clay was obtained from various places on the south bank of the Humber. The plant continued making up to 180,000 tonnes a year until closure in 1969.
