This is the original plant as installed in 1904, and subsequently expanded in 1927. The plant had originally used chalk from the Thames, brought in at the quay, but the disruption of coastal trade during WWI caused them to find a closer source, and chalk was brought by rail from Wharram-le-Street, East Yorkshire, and fed from the silos shown. After 1927, the plant used waste calcium carbonate from the ICI ammonium sulfate plant. |
