Malden Road, which maintained its alignment at the crossroad while Cheam Common Road was moved to make a straight connection.

Are these hoarding advertising the future development of this area? Within fifteen years of this picture being taken, nearly all of this area would be changed to shopping parades along the London Road and mostly semidetached or short terrace housing on many new side roads. The large houses (several with tennis courts) and the market gardens seen here would also disappear as the bus services from the Northern Line extension at Morden encouraged urban development along the London Road. At sometime during these developments the crossroad lost its stagger, with Cheam Common Road be brought into line with to form a slightly diagonal cross.

In EPW008685 taken the following year this poster clearly displays the legend "Sporting Life". Does this suggest this the picture was taken on Derby Day? This possibility might be supported by the number of charabancs and indeed one open top bus heading south behind the 'Queen Vic' (as it was known locally) public house.
