New Brighton Being demolished (not built as the incorrect tag says).
The tower was closed in 1914 following the outbreak of the First World War. The government made unsuccessful attempts to buy the tower for its metal. During the duration of the conflict, the steel structure was not maintained and consequently became rusty. Controversy still surrounds the decision to take down the tower because the structure was probably safe and only required general repairs. Demolition work was between 1919 and 1921. The metal was sold to scrap dealers. The ballroom remained open till the 1960s when it was destroyed in a fire. It was deemed irreparable and demolished. |

The tower was constructed c1899 and dismnantled c1920 due to neglect during WW1. So this image would be during demolition not construction. |

This area now reclaimed and protected (mostly - see 2012 1nd 2013 storms!) by a substantial sea wall.
Note how the railway is practically under sand! |
