Fogman's hut. In foggy weather this would be manned by a platelayer who would fasten on one rail a detonator if the adjacent signal showed caution. He would remove it if possible if the signal went to clear. The detonator would "explode" with a loud bang and warn the driver of his passing of a caution signal. They were not used at stop signals.
