Bideford Union Workhouse (1837). Designed by George Gilbert Scott (1811-78). In addition to many other commissions, he was the architect of over 40 workhouses, over 90 churches, 3 lunatic asylums, Reading Gaol and Buckingham Gaol, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Whitehall and the Midland Grand Hotel by St Pancras Station with 300 bedrooms. He was also responsible for the Prince Consort National Memorial (aka the Albert Memorial) in Kensington Gardens. He was the architect for restoration works at 25 British cathedrals and Westminster Abbey. From 1874 to 1876, his St Nikolai, Hamburg (1845–80), was the tallest building in the world.
