This type of appliance is known as a pump escape. The wheeled ladder required 4 men to operate and comprised (usually) 4 sections of extendable wooden ladder held within an adjustable carriage frame. Extending was done by small rotary winches incorporating wire cables. Widely used over many years and they have saved countless lives with their 45' height reach. No longer used as they have been superseded by the shorter metal 35' Lacon type ladder on pumping appliances. |

I think the amount of hose and the number of hydrants in use just to get water to the positions from which the fire can be fought is remarkable. It must have been a very difficult blaze to control. |
