HERE 'GEORGE RICHARDS ELKINGTON' 1801-65, WHO PATENTED THE WORLDS FIRST COMMERCIAL ELECTROPLATING PROCESS, OPENED HIS NEW 'SILVER ELECTROPLATING WORKS' IN 1841 IN NEWHALL ST, WITH HIS PARTNER COUSIN, HENRY, AFTER BECOMING THE SOLE HEIR TO HIS UNCLES' SILVER PLATING BUSINESS WHERE HE HAD BEEN APPRENTICED FROM 1815. JOSIAH MASON PROVIDED FINANCIAL BACKING AND IT BECAME 'ELKINGTON, MASON & Co' BETWEEN 1842 AND 1861. TAKEN OVER IN 1963 BY BRITISH SILVERWARE LTD, WHICH BECAME PART OF DELTA METAL Co Ltd IN 1971. THE BUILDING BECAME THE LOCATION OF THE 'BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY'.COLONNADED PORTICO WITH COAT OF ARMS SCULPTURE ATOP LASTED TIL 1960'S. ST PAUL'S CHURCH...JEWELLRY QUARTER...BUILDING STARTED 1777 AND CONSECRATED 1779. UPPER PART OF TOWER AND SPIRE ADDED 1822/3. BOMB DAMAGED WWII, REPAIRED IN 1949/51 WITH MUCH OF THE ROOF REPLACED. MASSIVE RESTORATION BETWEEN 1985 TO 1994. A PEAL OF 10 BELLS WAS INSTALLED IN 2005.

LOCATION OF THE 'NEW' BIRMINGHAM WORKHOUSE...OPENED IN 1852 AT THE JUNCTION OF DUDLEY ROAD AND WESTON RD. THIS REPLACED THE ORIGINAL WORKHOUSE BUILT 1734 BETWEEN LICHFIELD ST & STEELHOUSE LANE.

THE 'NEW STREET STATION' ROOF HAS BEEN REMOVED BECAUSE OF BOMB DAMAGE AND REPLACED BY THESE LOW PLATFORM STRUCTURES. THE ORIGINAL ROOF WAS, WHEN BUILT, THE LARGEST SINGLE SPAN UNSUPPORTED ROOF IN THE WORLD.
