"The American Site". These are the concrete aprons and bases of the temporary hangars where hundreds of USAAF aircraft were assembled after being shipped across the Atlantic into Avonmouth. Filton By-Pass. Construction of the dual carriageway stopped when war broke out and was abandoned altogether when it was decided to extend the runway across the By-Pass and through Charlton village to support the Brabazon project. BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation - the nationalised airline) used the West Bay of the Brabazon Hangar for several years from late 1948 until facilities at Heathrow were built.
