The company has gone the name removed.... This building formerly S G Brown who moved to Watford in 1948. Zoom in on EPW048127. S G BROWN RADIO RELAY PRODUCTS LTD Claimed first use of the term "loudspeaker". 1910/1911 Sydney George Brown formed a new company, S. G. Brown Ltd, to manufacture telephone equipment. With his wife's assistance, he designed a telephone relay, an improved receiver, and an effective loudspeaker (the Browns being first to use this name for the device). With the advent of radio broadcasting the company manufactured crystal receivers and, later, valve receivers. The company also manufactured horn loudspeakers and expanded greatly into the manufacture of various types of headphones. The company also produced moving coil loudspeakers, hearing aids and sound-on-disc recordings for talking pictures. 1915 With increasing demand for these products the company expanded making it necessary to move to larger premises in '''North Acton''' WWII. The Admiralty took charge of S. G. Brown Ltd, replacing the Browns with its nominated directors. 1943 Brown retired and sold his interest in S. G. Brown Ltd, including all gyro compass and radio telegraphy rights, to the Admiralty. In retirement, he devoted time mainly to cultivating orchids. The company moved in 1948 to North Watford then West Watford. Purchased by the Teledyne group in 2008 and now trade as Teledyne TSS International. Some products continue to be sold under the SG Brown banner; principally gyrocompass and hand-steering units for military vessels. Landis & Gyr Still trading - acquired by Toshiba in 2011. In the early days, electriciy started to be supplied (and sold) from suppliers to consumers. It had to pe paid for - to be billed. Richard Theiler and Adelrich Gyr-Wickart founded in Zug (Switzerland) the “Electrotechnisches Institut Theiler & Co.” in 1896. Around 1900 they produced electricity meters, as well as telephone inductors and phonographs. In 1905, it was renamed in Landis & Gyr (after Heinrich Landis and Karl Heinrich Gyr, who followed Richard Theiler as managers.) Built premises in Victoria Road in 1927. Originally used for making electricity meters, from 1972 the factory also made heating and ventilating controls, and in 1979 most of the company's 1,000 UK employees worked in Acton In 1984 production of Landis & Gyr BT Phonecards moved to Landis & Gyr's UK factory in Acton, London, Finally, in 1996, and with BT's decision to stop using optical card technology in favour of micro chip card technology, the factory producing the cards was closed.
