This whole area of the Southern Railway Works was known as Kimberley. This shop in 1948 was the 'Wagon building and repairing shop'. The southerly end was the 'new' Saw Mill.

In 1948 this was the 'carriage and wagon wheel shop, a stores, machine shop, and wagon smiths' & fitters shop all together in this long shop.

Wheel sets

This building in the 1970's was used as a stores.

In the 1970's I worked in this building; this was the old Wheel Shop. Old tyres were taken off, new tyres fitted. Boring of the new tyres. Reprofiling of worn and new tyres. Axles were profiled. Burnishing of axle journals. Balancing of the wheel sets. Copper or bronze spraying of axles and other activities.
