The Metals part of ICI became IMI - they used make make munitions at the Witton site (Eley brand I think) and the assembly huts were indeed surrounded by earth banks - either raised banks or sunken huts - in the event of an explosion the other huts (and workers) were protected from the blast. The area was in part referred to as the Kynoch Works. |

These are probably wooden pathways to the huts - wood was used to prevent the build up of static electricity that could cause sparks that would ignite the munitions being assembled. |
