This is a view of Cranford Ironstone quarries looking from the north. The railway running between the 2 quarries has now largely disappeared under the A14. |

Ha - got it! Class 31's thoughts on ironstone mining were correct. We're looking south-southwest over the area just east of the Northants village of Cranford St John. The country house identified by Matthew is Cranford Hall at SP 924773 |

Thanks everyone for the location details - we'll update the catalogue with the new information and post the updated record here in due course. It's good to get another image the eastern Midlands - Aerofilms Ltd didn't visit the area as much as the older industrial centes in the west Midlands and north, possibly because in counties like Nothamptonshire the heavier industry (such as ironstone/steel processing) didn't really kick off until post-WWII. I imagine that this is ironstone mining taking place somewhere north east of Northampton. |

Agree with Class31 that it's mining - rather than road or rail building. However, it could be open-cast coal mining which would unfortunately open up the possibly geographical areas. |
