This vessel I believe is the Post Office Cableship HMTS Monarch. She was completed in 1946 and would no doubt have been busy repairing or replacing submarine telegraph cables around the UK coast after the war. Cables were often deliberately damaged by either side to disrupt communications.There were several submarine cable manufacturers along the Thames at this time.

The vessel tagged in this image is the Post Office Cableship Monarch. She was later purchased by Cable and Wireless and renamed Sentinel. Based in Bermuda her role there was to maintain the subsea cables on the west side of the North Atlantic. She was one of the earliest vessels to be fitted with a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) developed for maintainance of submarine cables. |
