It's been an exciting year!

This film, made by East Oxford from Above project volunteers, captures the behind-the-scenes work of the Britain from Above project team.

Last Wednesday, we were very excited to welcome the Britain From Above activity team to the Museum of Oxford. Over 20 members of the English Heritage team made the journey from their Swindon HQ to Oxford to take a tour of the exhibition, to learn more about the community activities involved and to meet some of the project participants. It was fantastic to see the Town Hall gallery full of the people who have been so closely involved in conserving the amazing photos on display for future generations. The gallery was buzzing!

Following an exciting launch last month, the East Oxford From Above exhibition has been going down a storm with visitors to Oxford Town Hall Gallery.



We have had some lovely feedback from visitors and some great stories have been shared… from the gentleman who spent 40 minutes in the gallery recalling memories of growing up beside a long-gone garage near the Plain to the visitor who wrote in the comments book that ‘We have lived in East Oxford for 7 years, it’s such a wonderful, diverse, interesting, messy, fun and sometimes noisy place to live!'



The exhibition will be on in the gallery until Saturday 9 November. Do drop by if you're in Oxford!

The Museum of Oxford's Community Volunteer Team have nearly finished their exhibition panels for East Oxford From Above -our exciting community exhibition opening in Oxford Town Hall in just one month's time!

We took the East Oxford From Above Outreach Stall to Cowley Carnival over the weekend -it went down a storm! Thank you to our fantastic community volunteers for helping to inspire visitors to the stall -a number of people spotted their homes!

The Museum's East Oxford From Above Outreach Team did a fantastic job on Saturday (6th April 2013) engaging members of the public with Aerofilms photographs of Oxford's car plant. We spoke to almost 300 people who were fascinated to see photos of an area they know so well looking so different!

I grew up in Church Way, Iffley. My house was built 14 years before this was taken and must be obscured by the trees to the north.

Here's a challenge for you Headington people... I know it's not strictly our area for the exhibition, but this image has been distracting me and I've had a go at pinpointing various locations. What do people think? Have I got it right!?

This village in north Oxfordshire is where I lived for over 30 years before moving into central Oxford. The massive chimney seen here was always referred to as 'Old Smokey'.

This area has been partly demolished and rebuilt. Gloucester Green used to be the bus station and in earlier times had been the cattle market. The Morgue had been in a building in the centre of Gloucester Green later transformed into a cafe and public toilets.

You can just see the river Thames to the west of Meadow Lane in the top right-hand corner of this image. I assume the church tower on the corner of Jackdaw Lane and Iffley Road must be the church of St Edmund and St Frideswide before the site was expanded in 1930 to create Greyfriars.

The Radcliffe Observatory was later used by the University. It became the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research. I worked there. Wonderful view from the top.

Here is the poster for the first of our community activities.

Memory Lane is a regular Museum of Oxford reminiscence group and will be using Aerofilms photographs of East Oxford and the inspiration for the next two meetings

We are pleased to be delivering a partner project with Britain From Above. The project is called Oxford From Above. Aerofilm photos of East Oxford from the Britain From Above website will used to inspire a a variety of community arts activities. The first of these is Memory Lane, a reminscecne session at 2pm on 11th October. The session is entitled Living in East Oxford and anyone is welcome to join in. It takes place in the Heritage Learning Centre in Oxford Town Hall.
