What appears to be a small saddle tank loco (Manning Wardle K class ?) shunting the wagons for the private sidings to the left. Generally a lovely picture of a busy working station. Excellent. If I modelled the Great Central this would be really useful.

Loco shunting the yard, which on this side of the line is dominated by the large area of cattle dock and string of cattle trucks. The goods train being shunted is standing in the loop at the end of the platform.

Marshall, Son and Co were manufacturers of agricultural machinery that was widely used in this country and indeed around the world. Production on the site stopped in the mid 1990 after several attempts to keep the name afloat after amalgamations and takers-overs. The downfall seems to be the lack of capital to keep up with progress and technological changes. Some of the site is now a supermarket - says it all really. So much for British manufacturing industry.
