The shadow between the two tracks is the shielded side contact third rail, which has wooden planking over the top and on the far side. There is a visible break in the electrified rail just above this pin to permit the crossover - the trains had multiple pickups and could cope with such a small break. Above the break the electrified rail has switched to the outside of the tracks. As pick ups were on each side of the carriages, the electric third rail could also be on either side of the track. In stations they were both on the middle of the two tracks.

Crumpsall Station on the Railway line, Manchester Victoria (to the top) to Bury (to the bottom). This was an unusual early electrified line with side contact third rail. Now operated by Manchester Metrolink as a tram line with overhead wires. The sidings have gone.
