Pipers Green Lane (possibly a continuation of Green Lane before the construction of modern roads)

I now see that older maps show one continuous road generally named Green Lane, leading from Purcells Farm at the southern end to Newlands in the north, where the road comes out to Watling Street. To confuse the issue, an OS 1896 map shows present-day Manor Park Gardens as 'Pipers Green Lane', evidently taking its name from Pipers Green, to the east of Purcells Farm and lying between the farm and the Rectory (the latter still in place). Before that the locality is called Pipers Green, with no mention on the maps of Purcells Farm, while the long road itself is labelled as Green Lane. Studies of old place names suggest that 'Green Lane' typically indicates an ancient way. How strange that the name Pipers Green Lane, originally given to the short lane at the southerly end of Green Lane, should have been transferred in the 1920s to the northerly portion cut off by the new road to Stanmore.

The road name 'Edgware Lane' seems never to have been used historically, and the reference should be to 'Edgwarebury Lane'
