One of the municipal football grounds where I played for Slough Town Under XVs against Reading around 1959/60. However back in 1953 - the Coronation Year - it was the site of a May Day Pageant where we were made to dance around a maypole. Most of the primary schools took part. We had to wear Elizabethan dress which for us little boys was girls black tights and navy knickers with yellow diamonds sewn on! I'll never forgive them for that! The shame!
A school is now sited on the southern boundary - Herschel Grammar School - I think we (Slough Grammar School) played them at cricket in the early 60s. |

Stokeplace Farm - still survives today. I remember helping out picking up spuds and putting them in sacks on one of their fields off Muddy Lane. Got a whole florin for it - not bad for 1951 and a six year old. |

Row of shops at Junction of Stoke Poges Lane and Oatsland Drive. There was a fishmongers at the northern end and a newsagents and sweet shop at the western end. In between I remember there was grocers, a cycle shop, a co-op(?) where your bills were sent in a little canister suspended on overhead wires to a centrally positioned cashier. |
