Monkton Lodge. I think in the 1950s Gregory's the Petshop family lived there and had a market garden. My dad went there to but lettuce plants for our garden. |

After leaving school in 1959 I went for further education to Hebburn Technical College's Jarrow premises top of Kitchener Tce until mid 1960 and that little building is where the Tech ran their Technical Drawing subject. |

This piece of land had a small building on it and as the Quarry was adjacent to it, my guess would be it was the Storage building for the explosives used in Quarrying. Those buildings were deliberately built well away from the workers . Why not take a look at my Hebburn and our Neighbours message board.

This was the Pontop Line which carried coal from inland coal mines down to Jarrow Staiths. Kids sometimes got free (illegal) lifts from Hebburn and jumped off at Jarrow Park. Some ended up badly injured. I knew a boy who lost a leg and another who lost an arm. |

This little Pond was very very deep and during discussions on what it was we think it was the remains of a Bell Pit that the Monks used for obtaining coal. The closest coal seam is the Monkton Seam about 90 feet down. Rubble from the demolished houses from Jarrow town centre was disposed of into this 'pond'. |

This area of Land to the East of the Bowes Rail Line is a former Quarry? In this photo this area of land has returned back to field. But on Ordinance Survey Maps from 1916-1938 this land is shown as a Quarry! Before 1916, and after 1938 it is just field. The land was built upon in the 1960's by William Leech Builders to form the Ettrick Road Estate. |

I would like more information on this area. On the Ordinance Survey Map of 1916-1917, there is a building/structure shown here. I'm intrigued to find out what is was as my home is built directly on top of it. Whilst carrying out some recent building work I encountered its rather substantial concrete foundations! Is anyone able to shed light on this, (Norman Dunn!). |
