When Jarrow's streets were demolished in the early 1960s, a lot of the bricks and rubble were dumped into this very deep pit shaft which had filled with water over the years and became a dangerous pond probably 100ft deep. The pit shaft was hundreds of years old and an old 'Bell Pit' probably dug by the Monks to reach the Monkton coal seam. ( google the name)

Baker Perkins moved into this factory in 1945-6. Formerly it was called 'The Bomb Factory' where bombs. That would be why the roof was camaflouged

This was originally a small Power Station. It was turned into a Club for young people by out of work tradesmen volunteers, and called 'The Powerhouse'. It was used for Dances, Youth Club, Keep Fit training, weight lifting. Lot of pics on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website
