| What delightfully clean lines for this piece of fairly complex architecture. It remains in this state today, although increased railway operating efficiency means the number of tracks has been reduced. The symmetry of the pier has been broken by the addition of a roll-on roll-off ferry link-span on the southern (right-hand) side |

The station was designed by James Miller in 1903 for the Caledonian Railway and is remarkable in its use of glass and steel curves. The station is noted for its architectural qualities and, although one of Scotland's finest railway buildings and Category A listed, it has suffered from neglect. |
