Goods shed actually. The original engine shed was on the opposite side of the main line east of the station, though as traffic increased replacement facilities were constructed at Exmouth Junction.

The beauty of these photos is the detail they can provide. One reason I believe the season has ended is the absence of kit hanging to dry at the front of the grandstand. There are photos with a washing line stretched out midweek along the front of the grandstand with kit hanging out to dry.

Hi Allen T,

My thought exactly - they are great for detail! We are picking up some really good details in the images from jsut before and just after WWII, to do with ARP preparations and the aftermath.

Yours, Katy

Hi Katy. I've recently been looking at the areas I know well in greater magnification and the detail is phenomenal. Turns in the road, demolished buildings, fields and trees now housing, horses and carts, the complete absence of people and vehicles. I recommend anyone who knows an area well to really delve into the photo, it will provide an emotional satisfaction and pleasure. I even found my grandparents house just after they moved into it with bedsheets hanging out to dry on the washing line. A true moment in time.

St James Halt. A small railway platform for use on match days.

Up until the late 1960's this was the training area. Full of sharp stones and pieces of wood and nails with one dim light to illuminate the area at night. the ball would very often go through the fence on the left and side down the embankment onto the railway line!

The Big Bank. This held by far the greatest number of supporters and was all standing and at the mercy of the elements. The wind and rain blew in but on a sunny day it was the best place in the world to watch football! Now covered in with a roof.

The grandstand. The only seating at this time, the grandstand contained the changing rooms, admin offices, kit room and the boardroom. It was the administrative and only hub of the club. In 1933 the grandstand was relatively new having replaced the original grandstand which burnt down in the mid 1920's. The grandstand today is still the original structure and the internal layout has barely changed.

The Cow Shed. Covered standing on railway sleepers and aggregate which was replaced by concrete steps and then seating.

I should add that this was a rough and ready place to stand in the sixties but it was at least dry viewing in the rain. The noise and cigarette smoke wafting through the place gave it a character of its own!

Now replaced by a smart modern all seater grandstand and executive boxes.

St James Park home of Exeter City AFC. The 1932/33 season was for years their most successful until the club won the Fourth Division in 1989/90. In 1932/33 Exeter City were in the Third Division South and finished runners-up to Brentford but unfortunately only one team went up to the Second Division. Note the grass cutter and the removal of the crossbar on the right hand goal which suggests the season has just ended as in those days the FA Cup Final played on or around the 5th May was the last game of the season.

The 1933 Cup Final was held on 29 April. Finals were not regularly staged in May until the 1950s.
