This building was the B.R Cable Depot when I started work in July 1979. The traction cables for the third rail were made here and the cable jointers fitted them to the live rails all over Sussex. The depot closed in 1990, I don`t know when it became the depot after being a garage.

The new and very white prefabricated concrete platform walls and edge slabs where made by the Southern Railway at their Exmouth Junction depot in Exeter and used across the whole network, bring brought to site by train!

A two coach train of old, arc roofed, 'Brighton' coaches stands behind a former 'Brighton' tank engine, probably for the branch line to Ardingley. These steam services carried on after the electrification of the main line. It is possible a 'pull-push' train as the Southern called them driven from the front carriage when the engine was at the back of the train.

The Ardingly line was eventually electrified to Horsted Keynes. It was possible in the early days of the 'Bluebell' preserved railway to travel to Horsted Keynes from Haywards Heath in ancient Southern Railway electric rolling stock, until the branch line was closed. (I regret I have no date of closure.)

The preserved railway was reunited with the national network recently, but at East Grinstead. But there is some hope that the Ardingly branch might be restored as well.....

Lift towers and stairways under the end of the canopy are typical of the modern stations being introduced by the Southern at this time.

Yes - there also appears to be a small yard crane close by. Possibly installed to assist the movement of items to/from trains in connection with the electrification then taking place?

Much work was being carried out on the Brighton line between Coulsdon North and Brighton during 1932 to develop the first electrified main line railway in the UK. This included the introduction of coloured light signals, being the longest continuous stretch in the country. Full electric services from London to Brighton started on the 30 December 1932.
