It'll need an aircraft expert to sort this lot out! but I think I can see a spitfire wing (PK513) |

If I'm interpreting this properly, this number indicates that the runway points about 10 degrees north of due East.
If so, then this image is taken looking a little to the West of North. The shadows indicate that it would be late afternoon. |

This is RAF Colerne, south west corner of the airfield. I can identify 2 Spitfire fuselages and 2 Avro Anson fuselages. Also a Lancaster fuselage + separate nose, Wellington wing section |

Thanks Martin D, you may be interested to know that the original Aerofilms Ltd Register entry says "Scrap Planes, Gloucs". We’ll update the catalogue with the new location data and post the revised record here in due course. Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |

This NOT Abingdon Aerodrome. - Yes, Abingdon does have a '08' runway, but the adjascent road pattern and perimeter track do not match this photo. - Yes, Spitfire F22 PK513 was indeed destroyed in a fatal landing at Abingdon, after a flight from Andover on 24/7/50, but the possible presence of a Spitfire wing in the dump in this photo does not prove anything. In 1950, Spitfires were being decommissioned all over the country. |

Abingdon was a centre for repair and salavge and also has a 08 runway but I cant find a 1950's map to check if the road fits... |

I can find a record of a Spitfire PK513 being written off in a fatal landing accident at Andover or possibly Abingdon.. |
