The Ballast Hill. In the old days, to stop empty boats coming to collect coal from being unstable at sea they used sand/gravel to weigh the vessel down in the water. This was known as ballast. Today's ships use water which can be pumped in & out easily. So when a boat arrived for our coal, the ballast had to be dumped first hence Ballast Hills being created along the riverside close to the coal staiths.
