This was known to us as Rat Island to us locals in the 1960s. By then the main channel had been cut through to the right of the island as you look at the picture to make a straighter path to the pass under the bridge. The water to the left was still there making it difficult to get to the island but it gradually drained down during the 70s, eventually becoming totally dry. Part of the clump of trees appears to be still there as seen on Google Earth from Lea Bridge Road, but it's by no means an island anymore '
