' The Slag Heap. This heap on the Jarrow/Hebburn border was created from molten slag that came from Palmer's Iron Works in Jarrow. Slag from the Blast Furnaces was transported & dumped over many many years. It became a massive heap probably 100ft high. Me & my mates played on the Slag Heap throughout the 1950s. This photo taken in Monkton just south of it shows it in the distance. '
