Bushy House, begun in 1663 as the home of the Ranger at Bushy Park; it was extended in 1708. It was later occupied by William IV and after his death by his widow, Queen Adelaide.
At the end of 1900 Queen Victoria granted Bushy House and its grounds to the Royal Society for the use of the National Physical Laboratory which had been established the previous year and was originally expected to be located in Old Deer Park, Richond.
The Laboratory was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in March 1902.
