' Blair's Engine Works – this business started constructing railway locomotives and rolling stock in 1839 when it was called Fossick and Hackworth. By the 1850s railway business was falling away and the company diversified into the manufacture of marine steam engines for installation in ships being built at Stockton. Following the retirement of Thomas Hackworth and George Fossick's death, George Blair took over the company, which became Blair and Company. Business was good and Blair's was a much respected major employer in Stockton until the mid 1920s. By this time the company had been through several takeovers, suffered financial problems and orders declined. The works finally closed completely in 1932 either just before or just after this photograph was taken. '
