' This railway line, called The North Shore Branch, was opened in 1833 by The Clarence Railway as a branch into Stockton from its main line at Norton. The Clarence was built as a direct competitor to the Stockton and Darlington Railway, suffered from a series of operating difficulties and consequently only had a short independent existence. The Clarence Railway does not feature greatly in railway literature, but there are accounts of its history and competition with its near neighbour in several books dealing with the history of railways on Teesside and in County Durham.
