In 1922 a scheme was prepared for widening about 2½ miles of this line between Longbridge and Barnt Green, which included the tunnel, by the addition of two new lines on the Eastern or down side. The tunnel was too tight in gauge to permit the use of modern wide carriage stock, and as the height of the ground above rail level was only about 70 feet it was decided to open out the tunnel and accommodate both the existing and new lines in an open cutting. In May 1928 there was a terrible accident The tunnel prematurely collapsed on some workers causing the tragic deaths of four workers. Source Austin Railways. '
