St Peters Walworth church (Grade I listed): Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was appointed to design the Grade I listed St Peter’s Church. The foundation stone was laid in 1823, and the completed building consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1825. By the early 19th Century the population of this part of London had increased considerably and the old parish church of St. Mary’s Newington was proving inadequate for the increased congregation. Thus two new parishes were created one centered in Holy Trinity, Trinity Square, and one on St. Peter’s, Walworth. On October 1940, the church took a direct hit in the Blitz, sadly resulting in numerous casualities and 67 deaths. The church remains intact. '
