Swift Levick & Sons Ltd., Clarence Steel Works, Sheffield, were engaged during the whole period of the war in the manufacture of specialities required by the Service departments. They produced enormous quantities of permanent magnets for the Air Ministry, the Admiralty and the War Office, for every type of instrument used in aircraft, minesweeping, radiolocation, field telephones and many other purposes.
Permanent magnets were so vital for the prosecution of the war that immediately following the blitz on Sheffield in December, 1940, they were instructed by the Air Ministry to duplicate their plant at a shadow factory in Derbyshire so as to ensure a flow of magnets whatever happened to Sheffield.
They also produced in large quantities forgings and stampings in alloy steels for aircraft, tanks and many other war purposes, employing methods of manufacture which had never previously been used, but which proved most successful in certain vital parts of the heaviest bombers.
In addition they were heavily engaged on the production of special alloy steels. '
