I don;t know if this was a private house in 1926, but when I was a child in the 1960s in Middleton, this was the 'Old Town Hall' and there was an ugly white office block built behind it as the 'New Town Hall', more or less where the ornamental gardens are in this picture. Rochdale council later took over and completely destroyed the centre of Middleton with a hideous Arndale centre, and the 'New Town Hall' became the Water Board I think. '
