This would be a 4 car unit of Watford Joint Tube Stock on the DC 'up' line. This stock was built for the LNWR/LER Bakerloo Line Watford branch service. It was ordered in 1914 for the new route but wartime conditions determined that delivery did not start until 1920. During peak times the trains were usually made up as 6 car units. The stock was jointly owned by the LNWR (later LMS) and the LER Bakerloo Line. It would have been quite new at the time of the photograph and at the time painted in the LNWR livery of plum and white.
The Watford Joint Stock suffered from reliability problems and from about 1930, it would be replaced by Standard Tube Stock, although some units were retained for use on the Rickmansworth (LMS) and Croxley Green (LMS) branches.
The LNWR/LMS DC line would also have been shared with the Euston-Watford suburban service then operated using Oerlikon electric multiple unit stock. '
