' PS "Medway Queen" built 1924, rebuilt 2009 -13. This famous vessel was built for the New Medway Steam Packet Co and sailed on the outer Thames/Essex routes util requisitioned as a minesweeper in WW2. Her finest hour was at the Dunkirk evacuation when she rescued over 7000 troops during 7 trips across. Continuing her passenger services in post war years she was withdrawn from service in 1963 and fortunately was saved from the scrap man and spent many years on the Isle of Wight deteriorating as the years passed. The Medway Queen preservation society moved her to KIngsnorth in 1987 but lacked the funds to restore her until eventually Lottery funds were obtained and she was deconstructed and taken to Bristol for rebuilding. The hull is new but as many parts as was possible have been incorporated in the 'new'ship. The 'Heroine of Dunkirk returned to Gillingham in 2013 and so is now back home. '
