Looks as if the photographer was lucky, and caught the branch engine shunting empty coal wagons. The brake van for the train seems to have been left alongside on the 'main' line

This is a device for unloading coal wagons on the standard gauge sidings into a hopper that served the 2' gauge railway to the gasworks, situated at the bottom of the embankment. It's hard to make out, but it looks as though the wagons were rotated on a wagon turntable and then one end was hoisted up so the coal would drop out of the end doors and into the hoppers.

This is the second truss bridge taking the 2' gauge railway from the island and into the gasworks. This little railway carried coal from the Midland Railway Stroud branch line to the gasworks
