Joules Brewery - this warehouse alongside the canal still stands. The joule as a unit of energy was named after a descendant of this family. The brewery trade mark was derived from the mark placed on blessed barrels of ale by monks in the 18th C. The Red Cross is the 6th oldest beer mark in the world. The brewery started in 1780 but the brewer was brewing before that in pub premises where beer had been brewed since 1600 or so. This brewery was the first English brewed beer exported to New York. Their most notable beer style was Pale Ale. Bass Charrington acquired the brewery in the 1970s (their equally old trade mark was a red triangle) and demolished it leaving just the warehouse.

Of this large group of buildings only this part with small tower remain. In 1793 a Parish workhouse was erected. By 1839 it had been enlarged to 300 inmates. In 1879 and 1901 an infirmary (now demolished) was enlarged. A Nurses home was added. The buildings became Trent Hospital and was closedin the 1990's.
