This is the spur that lead from fletcher's canal to the Botany Bay Colliery, This image shows the spur has been filled in. it did continue and pass under the railway then into the colliery.

Winding hole. The boat just setting off from below the lock is empty, and probably going through the lock to turn, then back down again. To Pomona or Salford Docks perhaps?

According to the book "Bridley at Wet Earth Colliery" (Banks & Schofield: David & Charles 1968), this was the stub of a branch canal that served Botany Bay Colliery on the other side of the main line.
