Actually known as the Deep Water Wharf, my grandfather, Frank Lund, was the analytical chemist at Northfleet Paper from 1919 to 1929 (it went bust that year) and returned as general manager to New Northfleet Paper Mills from 1944 to his retirement in 1962. Both my aunt and uncle were born in one of the mill cottages. By the 1950's the factory included the DWW, NNPM, Kent Kraft Mills, the British Vegetable Parchment factory and a printing works (East Kent Printing?). During the 20's Frank Lund was a JP and Chairman of Swanscombe Parish Council. During that time (1927?) he was summoned to Whitehall to face possible surcharging for building homes for sale to local workers and selling them at less than the government-stipulated price. In the event he was given a stiff 'rap across the knuckles' and told not to do it again. |
