Midland Railway No. 1 grain warehouse (Brook Street) was built in the early 1890's. It was rented by Bass. The capstans in it's sidings for moving wagons were operated by hydraulic pressure from the Midland's hydraulic power house situated just north of the No. 4 grain/bonded warehouse. Bass paid the Midland for the use of this power. |

Midland Railway hydraulic power house. This supplied hydraulic power to the No. 4 grain/bonded warehouse for it's lifts, hoists etc. and also powered the capstans in the sidings serving the warehouse. It also supplied power to capstans serving No. 1 grain warehouse which was rented by Bass and Co. Boilers supplied steam to operate pumps which pumped water into an hydraulic accumulator which supplied a steady hydraulic pressure all the time. |

"A rifle club, newly-established in 1852, probably formed the nucleus of the Rifle Volunteer Corps set up in 1859. The marquess of Anglesey provided a shooting range at the north end of Burton meadow. When the volunteers were assigned to line regiments in 1883, Burton became the headquarters of a battalion of the Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment, later a Territorial Army unit. " |
