This building housed the workmen that maintained the pit houses, the miners used to congregate here to wait for the pit paddy's that bus'd local mineworkers to other mines in the district.

1960's Mr and Mrs King owned the shop, a sweet and tobacconist and newspapers. The shop is now a Hair and Beauty Parlour |

1960's, Mr Farthing owned the chemist shop here. It still remains a chemist shop but now belongs to a big chain. |

Doctor's - 1960's I remember Dr Armitage ( later to become a flying Doctor on the oil rigs), Dr Nugent. Dr Diggle also started at this surgery before moving to practice in South Elmsall. |

The hole left behind from removing clay, the bricks, most of which built the houses for the mining company. Note that in the 1928 photographs the narrow gauge railway extends from the brickyard into the housing estate that was being built.

Shinwell Estate - prefab houses, later demolished and a new council house development built. Due to the elevation this area took a regular buffeting from the strong winds which regularly did extensive damage and removed roofs. The site was demolished again and maisonettes built for the elderly and disabled in its place. There are further new build private housing in this area now. |
